Success has not yet been appointed
From the public (London) papers I also gather that my name has been confidently put forward, of course without authority, and equally of course without my knowledge, for the vacant appointment. It would however surprise as well as pain me if the rumour of this public announcement proved ultimately incorrect, for I venture with all respect to submit that out of the Colonial Service, no one, in or out of it, has a stronger claim than myself to the Government of Stoughtons.
To put this claim beyond a doubt I beg to refer to official Despatches, on record in the Colonial Office, addressed to the Secretary of State by the several Governors of the Colony during the last 20 years.
Sir John Davis recorded his sense of my services in the following: "Confidential" of 12th December, 1844; "Financial" No. 23 of 28th February, 1846; "Civil" No. 57 of 21st May 1847; and in No. 129 of 27th December 1847.
Sir George Bonham's opinion of my qualifications will be found in No. 67 of 28th August 1848; "Separate" of 27th December 1848, Inclosure to 4; "Civil", No. 37 of 26th April 1850; and "Miscellaneous" No. 11 of 20th January 1854.
